Every demographic of students has seen a slide in third-grade literacy. White students, for instance, saw a 6.5 percentage point drop, from 58.2% proficient in 2014 to 51.7% in 2016. That compares with black students, who declined 3.3 percentage points, from 23.2% to 19.9%; Hispanic students, who declined 5.2 percentage points, from 37.2% to 32%, and Asian students, who declined 6.3 percentage points, from 69.7% to 63.4%. Meanwhile, low-income students (those eligible for free or reduced price lunch), declined 6.2 percentage points, from 35.3% to 29.1%; while higher-income students declined 6.4 percentage points, from 66.8% to 60.4%.

And:

Just 23% of Michigan's students graduate prepared for college or careers. And the state ranked 46th in fourth-grade reading and 37th in eighth-grade math on a rigorous national exam.

What the hell are they doing? I'll reveal what the problem really. The drops were not East Asians or European whites.

The real reason was revealed as the massive Muslim population of Dearborn and Detroit are counted as white. They perform as badly as blacks under similar incompetent diversity dogma.

The words of environmental activists:

The above illustrates why also I'm a skeptic. Climate alarmism has been around for 100 years. At 62 I've read this alarmist hype for decades.

Climate change is real. It is largely due to natural causes. Their "end of the world" hysteria is irrational. It completely defies even basic earth science.

To quote Dr. Patrick Moore founder of Greenpeace:

Science is based on observation and verification and replication.

The case against science is straightforward: much of the scientific literature, perhaps half, may simply be untrue. Afflicted by studies with small sample sizes, tiny effects, invalid exploratory analyses, and flagrant conflicts of interest, together with an obsession for pursuing fashionable trends of dubious importance, science has taken a turn towards darkness...

Nowhere is this more true than so-called climate change. Research is poisoned by politics. Refusal to follow the scientific method is widespread. Computer models replace actual measured data - in some cases resorting to altering or even manufacturing data.

Why Learning Programming is Difficult

As a vocational instructor I know exactly what the problem is, it's the education system and the students themselves. Liberal politics and social engineering has replaced academics and merit.

Social engineering is killing us. The failure shows up in particular in science and math which often tells how one will perform IT and STEM subjects.

California is the home of Silicon Valley and their 2011 ACT scores are pathetic. Whites and Asians do OK but in science Blacks and Hispanics score near single digits and under 36% in math. For all students it was 34% in science and 57% in math.

Worse only 2 percent of high school graduates taking the ACT even expressed interest in computer information specialties.

Because of complaints that Blacks and Hispanics couldn't compete with Asians and whites in honor classes Fairfax County Virginia dropped them - so are a lot of other schools.

Andrew Hacker professor of political science at Queens College, City University of New York believes algebra and other higher math requirements should be dropped from high school and from college admissions requirements. He complains, "six million high school students and two million college freshmen struggling with algebra".

Another Progressive useful idiot.

In my classes in electronics and electricity at a community college I had to deal with high school graduates that had no real science classes - just biology-ecology survey class mostly centering on climate change. Ditto math or electron theory.

Many could not move a decimal point or even use a scientific calculator, but the class required trig and algebra at minimum to work out phase angles, inductive reactance, and voltage drops.

Being so ill prepared means the instructor has to waste time simply getting them to be able to take the class – which chewed into instruction time for the main subject. I refused to pass students that couldn't do the work and got into trouble of it.

These were white students in Appalachia - over 60% of entering freshmen had to take remedial math and English. What is missing is critical thinking and analytical skills along with basic reading and writing.

The simple fact is many of these failing subgroups don't care - their culture is hostile to education.

Same problem I had growing up in a coal town in Southwest Virginia – thousands showed up at football games – barely a dozen at a science fair even when they were having one.

It's not racism nor discrimination it's culture and aptitude. Like it or not some simply don't have the aptitude for abstract-analytical thinking or book learning.

Using hand-on examples like Arduino or Raspberry Pi is a some help. Before these came out I taught my students using GW Basic and Borland C++ to program a PC printer port to blink LEDs and detect switches and they got it – but there's only so much of that I can do.

Hands on works well to a degree as the projects on my electronics website (www.bristolwatch.com) has shown but there has to be interest to try. Not so oddly much of my web traffic is from Asia.

I'm well aware that dysfunctional households are an impediment to learning - I grew up in one. Excuses like non-English speakers in the home doesn't wash either as shown by the high performance of Asians versus Blacks or Hispanics.

The New York Times reports almost 90% of high-achieving poor students are white and Asian, yet the system is obsessed with low-achieving non-Asian minorities. The question is do we help those that can succeed or do we continue to waste time pursuing unobtainable outcome equality?

Bartender and New York Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says:

"Fighting climate change will be 'the civil rights movement of our generation'. It's inevitable that we will create jobs. We can use the transition to 100 percent renewable energy as the vehicle to truly deliver and establish economic, social and racial justice in the United States of America."

What is wrong with the above picture?

Chicago is a typical Progressive community. Things have changed greatly since 1970 from a majority white, middle-class community. The result is 64% poor (red), 16% middle class (yellow), and 20% affluent (blue). Notice how the wealth is concentrated along the North Shore.

Progressives gain power with an alliance of Red and Blue that outvotes the entire rest of the state.

Socialists, Leftists, Progressives, Democrats, etc. utilize identity politics for political gain. They care nothing about "minorities" or poor people.

California has the highest real poverty rates in America. This has come about due to mass immigration of millions of poor, unskilled third-world peasants.

Rich liberals attack poor white people as racists. Yet they rule poverty-ridden minority dominated cesspools.

In the article How Diversity Punishes Asians, Poor Whites and Lots of Others by Russell K. Nieli proves this point. To quote,

When lower-class whites are matched with lower-class blacks and other non-whites the degree of the non-white advantage becomes astronomical: lower-class Asian applicants are seven times as likely to be accepted to the competitive private institutions as similarly qualified whites, lower-class Hispanic applicants eight times as likely, and lower-class blacks ten times as likely.

Racism is differing standards based on race.

What Level of Knowledge?

Here I'm interested in electronics. A working knowledge of technology outside of playing video games or Windows 10 can be an asset.

There are all types of knowledge and how people function and use that knowledge is mainly genetic and varies by individual. This is based on Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences. I prefer aptitudes over intelligences, a socially loaded word.

To quote myself,

Spatial intelligence refers to the ability to mentally visualize and manipulate objects. What this means is one can within their mind see the inner workings of a device or grasp the workings of things that can't be seen.

A good example of this is electronics where one can mentally see current flow through a complex circuit even when the movement of charges is invisible to our senses. We can only sense the results of the current flow when for example, a heating element gets hot.

This is mainly inherited and can't really be taught...Logical mathematical intelligence of course involves numbers, logic and abstractions. This goes hand-in-hand with spatial intelligence in engineering, computer science, and in scientific and technological professions in general on the technician side.

Reading a blueprint isn't that different than reading an electrical diagram, a more detailed blueprint. These two aptitudes are closely related in electronics. A technician may have to connect, wire, or troubleshoot a system. Engineers are often more abstract heavy on advanced math. A hobbyist will tend to build small projects.

At this point one really needs to decide what level of knowledge they want to acquire, how much hands on, and previous education.

If entering community college I'd recommend survey level classes in chemistry and physics if one has not had them in high school. Also mathematics at least through trigonometry and algebra 2. The higher the better.

Most computer science classes never touch on computer functions as such. C, C++, and assembly language if available are a big plus.

While Python is popular today and used with the Raspberry Pi, it's not suitable for electronics control. This is a low-end personal computer in itself. I'd also learn to use Linux as well.

Knowledge and intelligence leads to success in the new economy. Lower-skilled workers compete with automation. Plus the economy is flooded with unskilled immigrants. This leaves us with serious social problems.

Ability varies and it varies a lot and can't be social engineered away. Many attending four-year colleges shouldn't be. They often end up with worthless paper and mountains of debt.

With science and reason under attack we must learn to speak out.

Definition empiricism: "the theory that all knowledge is derived from sense-experience. Stimulated by the rise of experimental science, it developed in 17th and 18th centuries" in Europe and America. That means one must present physical, verifiable proof not vote, conjecture, authority, or mere opinion. John Locke and David Hume are two of it's early leaders. Science without empiricism is not science. Empiricism has nothing to do with faith, feelings, or popular vote.

Consensus is about politics, not science. As a Deist I'm in a constant fight with religious mystics pushing pantheism and other New Age style beliefs. So compromised are ecology and environmentalism they are have little to do with science - if they ever did.

A group of aircraft are ditched in Greenland in 1942. Glacier Girl was recovered in 1992 50 years later. Under 265 ft. of snow and ice. See the graphic on Glacier Girl. Greenland was far warmer 1000 years ago when trees grew there and Viking settlers grew crops and raised sheep.

Peak oil was a myth. When I was growing up in the 1970s they said we would exhaust most metals by 1990. Didn't happen. Millions would starve by 2000. Record wheat and grain harvests no end in sight. I can buy a 50-pound bag of feed for my chickens for $10.

I can buy a 2 lb. bag of carrots for 79 cents. 50 lbs. of potatoes for $13. Gasoline is a little over $2 a gallon. Yet people whine and bitch endlessly over the end of the world. Not happening.

I've heard this Armageddon clap-trap from religious fundamentalists and environmentalists for 50 years. Enough! Let's return to reason!

Jesus isn't coming and Antarctica is getting colder. 90% of the world's ice is in Antarctica, 8% in Greenland. See the graphic Arctic Sea Ice whose melt "official" record goes back to only 1980! It began melting about 1800 when the Little Ice Age Ended!

But Greenland glaciers are breaking off driving nature spiritualists into hysterics. Yes they do all the time due to continued snowfall on the glaciers. Gravity and mass "squeezes" out ice that break off as ice bergs. That is what sunk the Titanic.

They prefer to go back to 1880 when the climate began warming in 1800! See the graphic Ice core data from Greenland.

If the entire atmosphere was 1 gallon of water it would weigh 128 oz. Total CO2 is 0.04% or 0.0512 oz. Of that from all sources including human since ~1900 is 0.0128 oz. or 300 milligrams has been added.

Definition of rationalism: "a belief or theory that opinions and actions should be based on reason and knowledge rather than on religious belief or emotional response."

Definition irrationalism: "a system emphasizing intuition, instinct, feeling, or faith rather than reason or holding that the universe is governed by irrational forces." (Merriam-Webster).

Eco-Spiritually is Anti-Science

Many today claim to be spiritual but not religious. Spiritualism is religion functionally and mentally.

Why have so many Socialists hitched a ride on the climate change bandwagon? Why have so many post-Christian liberal churches latched onto Ecology? Why do we have college degrees that combine ecology with religion!

The following nonsense is offered at Yale on "Religion and Ecology":

The concentration in Religion and Ecology is an interdisciplinary program based in the YDS curriculum and draws on faculty resources in biblical studies, ethics, liturgical studies, pastoral care, spirituality, theology, and world religions and ecology. It spans the study of eco-theology; eco-spirituality; eco-feminism; theologies of embodiment, place, land, race, and indigeneity; environmental ethics; liturgy and creation; and cosmology and ecology.

What rubbish. Eco-theology??? Eco-spirituality??? That along with Marxism are an influence in the Green New Deal some are pushing. To quote,

Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has championed the 'Green New Deal,' an idea rapidly gaining traction in Democratic Party circles.

The 'democratic socialist' from New York has pushed for the policy in alarmist terms: 'People are going to die,' she says, unless it becomes law. Or perhaps 'Americans are dying' already. Either way, we face 'cataclysmic climate disaster' unless Congress can 'plan and implement a Green New Deal' in ten years.

But the "Green New Deal" has little to do with the environment. It is the latest incarnation of a "red-green" strategy, developed decades ago, which seeks to achieve socialist economic policy through the ruse of environmental crisis.

The "Lutheran Alliance for Faith, Science and Technology" is an absurdity. Science and technology have NOTHING to do with faith.

To quote Virginia Tech and its "Executive Master of Natural Resources":

...Today’s environmental management and sustainable development challenges require more than scientific and technical knowledge...

Again it's a fusion of science, religion, leftwing politics, etc. These are the whack jobs pushing the climate agenda for more than "scientific and technical knowledge".

Do we want this nonsense at the EPA? Hell no! There is an issue of separation of religion and state. Science mixed with any form of religion is religion, period.

The basic theory behind eco-spirituality is that the divine is present in all creation – which is known as panentheism (and pantheism) - and that we are to expand our love of 'neighbor' to include the entire cosmos and all creatures, plants, trees, etc.

The New Age version of eco-spirituality fosters a religious worship of nature known as pantheism, which is based on the belief that the cosmos is animated by one spirit or is guided by a universal consciousness of which man is merely one more participant.

Total rubbish. No thank you I'll stick to reason and science. Environmentalism is poisoned by this New Age garbage. Many scientists hold somewhat similar views. Pantheism amounts to feel-good atheism.
