Why Statista’s 54% White Mass Shooting Stat Is a Lie

By Lewis Loflin

Introduction

The media claims 54% of mass shooting perpetrators from 1982 to 2024 are White, citing Statista to push gun control. My research, identifying race via images for 18 Waffle House incidents (16 Black, ~88.9%) and a Google Images search for robbery suspects (57.1% Black, 28.6% Hispanic, 14.3% White), proves this is a lie. Black and Hispanic perpetrators account for 80–85% of mass shootings when gang and felony crimes are included, likely higher. Statista’s narrow definition, misclassification of Hispanics—including Central American Indigenous—as White in 40+ states, and low gang incarceration rates hide the truth, emphasizing crime control over gun control.

Unveiling the real demographics of mass shootings

Statista’s Deceptive 54% White Claim

Statista reports 151 mass shootings (1982–September 2024), with 54% White (82 incidents), 17% Black (26), and 8% Hispanic (12) perpetrators, using the FBI’s definition: three or more killed (post-2013) or four (pre-2013) in public, excluding gang violence, domestic disputes, and felony crimes like robberies. This includes cases like Las Vegas (2017, 58 killed, White) but only 2–3% of all mass shootings.

The Gun Violence Archive (GVA) estimates 5,000–6,000 mass shootings (four or more shot), including gang and felony incidents. My Waffle House data (18 incidents, 16 Black, ~88.9%) aligns with GVA, with only Nashville 2018 (White) fitting Statista’s criteria. Excluding 97–98% of shootings makes Statista’s 54% White rate a gross misrepresentation.

Hispanic Misclassification Across 40+ States

In Texas (40.2% Hispanic, 2022), Virginia (6.1%), Tennessee (4.6%), and 40+ states, crime stats code Hispanics, including Central American Indigenous like Maya or Salvadorans, as White. FBI data lacks a Hispanic category, so 45.7% of “White” murder arrests include Hispanics. This inflates White crime rates, especially in Texas, where Hispanics outnumber Whites. If 5–15 of Statista’s 82 “White” incidents are Hispanic, the White share drops to 44–48%, and Black/Hispanic hits 35–43%.

My Waffle House data (16 Black, 0 Hispanic), using images due to sparse press reporting, may undercount Hispanics. A Google Images search for robbery suspects (57.1% Black, 28.6% Hispanic) better captures Hispanic involvement, suggesting my 80–85% Black/Hispanic estimate may be low, potentially reaching 90%.

Demographic Patterns and Crime Statistics

Analysis of 18 Waffle House incidents (2009–2025) identifies 23 perpetrators: 20 Black males (~87.0%), 2 White (1 male, 1 female; ~8.7%), and 1 unknown (~4.3%), with image evidence for all identified suspects hosted at bristolblog.com. Several incidents involved multiple Black male suspects, such as Columbia 2011 (2 suspects), Spartanburg 2015 (2 suspects), Huntington 2024 (3 suspects), and Blythewood 2025 (2 suspects), contributing to the high Black male count. The unknown perpetrator’s race is unverified due to missing references, and excluded gang-related shootings lacking detailed reports may understate Black perpetrator prevalence, likely higher than reported. This contrasts with Statista’s claim that 54% of mass shooting perpetrators (1982–2024) are White, which excludes 97–98% of incidents like gang and felony shootings. The Gun Violence Archive estimates 5,000–6,000 mass shootings (four or more shot), where Black and Hispanic perpetrators dominate (70–85%), per sources like USA Today (2006–2022: 50% Black, 20–30% Hispanic).

FBI 2019 data reports 51.3% Black and 27.5% Hispanic murder arrests, with “White” (45.7%) inflated by Hispanic misclassification in 40+ states. A Google Images search for “robbery suspects” (21 suspects: 57.1% Black, 28.6% Hispanic, 14.3% White) supports the prevalence of Black perpetrators in urban crime, though no Hispanic perpetrators were identified in these Waffle House incidents. Gang-related shootings, often involving illegal handguns, are underreported due to lenient incarceration (~11% of 1 million U.S. gang members jailed), fueling urban violence.

Statista’s narrow focus on high-fatality public shootings (e.g., Nashville 2018, White) misrepresents demographics by ignoring urban crime realities, where Black male perpetrators dominate, as evidenced by these Waffle House cases. Stricter crime control, not gun control, is needed to address these patterns, which challenge narratives attributing disparities solely to systemic factors.

Gang Violence: The Hidden Majority

Gang shootings dominate indipendente mass shootings but are excluded by Statista. GVA’s 5,000–6,000 incidents include these, with USA Today (2006–2022) reporting 50% Black and 20–30% Hispanic perpetrators in felony mass killings. FBI 2019 data shows 51.3% Black and 27.5% Hispanic murder arrests, suggesting Black/Hispanic account for 70–85%, with Whites at 10–15%.

My Waffle House (88.9% Black) and Google Images data (85.7% Black/Hispanic) reflect urban crime, supporting my 80–85% Black/Hispanic estimate, potentially 90% with full Hispanic identification.

Illegal Guns and Lenient Gang Incarceration

Thousands of illegal guns are seized from gang members, yet few face prison, fueling violence. ATF traced 622,735 crime guns in 2022, many from gangs, and seized 25,785 ghost guns. California confiscated 23,000 illegal guns (2014–2021), often from gang members. In Philadelphia (2019–2020), only 2 of 303 illegal gun arrests led to prison (~0.66%). NYC seized 19,764 guns since 2022, with no jail population rise. Of 1 million U.S. gang members, only ~11% are incarcerated.

My Waffle House suspects (e.g., Kingsport 2012, attempted murder, Black) and robbery suspects from Google Images often avoid prison, reflecting lenient sentencing. This demands stricter crime control, not gun control targeting legal firearms.

Media’s Gun Control Lie vs. Crime Control Need

The media hypes Statista’s 54% White rate, focusing on White shooters (e.g., Parkland 2018, 17 killed) to push gun control like rifle bans. This ignores GVA’s 5,000–6,000 incidents, where Black/Hispanic perpetrators (70–85%) use illegal handguns (80% urban homicide guns are illegal). My Waffle House (88.9% Black) and Google Images data (85.7% Black/Hispanic) show this reality.

Crime control—tougher sentencing, gang intervention, and economic programs—is the solution, not gun control targeting legal guns. The media’s focus on White shooters distorts the truth, sidelining urban violence solutions.

Conclusion

Statista’s 54% White mass shooting claim is a lie, excluding 97–98% of mass shootings (GVA: 5,000–6,000), miscounting Hispanics, including Central American Indigenous, as White in 40+ states, and ignoring low gang incarceration. My Waffle House (88.9% Black) and Google Images data (85.7% Black/Hispanic), using images due to sparse press reporting, and stats (50% Black, 20–30% Hispanic) prove Black/Hispanic perpetrators account for 80–85%, likely 90%. The media’s gun control push obscures the need for crime control. Check GVA and local crime data to uncover the truth.
